Feng Shui - Some Useful Points

Humans are a part of the environment and everything affects us; the directions, the elements and even the placement of objects have a lot of significance in our lives. If we understand the energies that surround us and how best to harmonize our homes and offices with them, there can be a marked difference in our lives.

Feng Shui is a science of living in harmony with the environment so that the energies do not get disrupted. Healthy exchange of energies is vital for our physical and mental well being.

The scientific research has revealed that everything is energy. The smallest of the elements and matter can be broken down quarks which are nothing but energy. Einstein's equation also reveals that matter and energy are interconvertible. Hence the principles of Feng Shui are actually quiet scientific. Fen Shui believes that everything has energy which is known as "chi". The uninterrupted or the disrupted flow of this energy creates all the harmony or the problems in our lives. Hence the placement of objects, furniture, windows and doors needs to be in harmony with the environment. This harmony then permeates into the life of the person and brings prosperity.

There are many principles of Feng Shui which are simple and easy to follow, so here are some tips:

  1. The entrance door or the main door of the house should be devoid of any clutter and dirt. Dirty smells or dirt should be kept away from the entrance since chi travels with the air and can bring dirty smells which can cause problems.
  2. Mirrors facing your bed or on the side are strictly prohibited in Feng Shui since this can lead to a third person meddling into your relationship and cause fights.
  3. The fashionable bunk beds are not allowed in Feng Shui since chi needs to circulate around and under the bed. Hence, the person sleeping in the lower bunk bed may have problems associated with health.
  4. Many people like to decorate their homes with ornamental knives and swords. This is alright but you need to take care that the tips of these weapons should point in the direction of the doors and windows and not inside the house.
  5. Clutter can really create havoc in your life since it blocks chi. Hence you need to keep your office space or worktable clean and clear so that positive energy abounds.

These are some general tips to enhance your life with Feng Shui. These days there are many divorces and break ups taking place. Here are some Feng Shui tips to enhance your relationship with Feng Shui:

  1. If you are in a new relationship, then you need to let go of the past. Throw away everything which has a connection to a past relationship, old photographs and keep sakes need to go so that new ones can come in.
  2. People often have computers and televisions in their bedroom. However, we need to remember that bedrooms are basically meant for tranquility, romance and relaxation. Hence, find a different place for these equipments as their energies are in conflict with the bedroom. Television and other equipments have a yang energy which interferes with your sleep and relaxation and also does not let you concentrate on your partner.

These tips will help you in understanding and enhancing your relationships to bring peace and prosperity in your life.

Numbers in Feng Shui and the Fortunate Number 8

There has been so much discussion about feng shui with the Olympic Games in Beijing and in particular the symbolism and meaning of numbers. It was interesting to hear western broadcasters repeatedly refer to the fortunate number "8". So Let's talk about the number 8 in feng shui terms. Presently, we are in what is called a period 8 cycle.

Cycles in feng shui are 20 years in length and the period 8 cycle began in 2004. The number 8 is associated with the northeast mountain, the earth element and the life aspiration of knowledge. We are careful not to place a water feature in the northeastern area of the home or property during period 8 because the water element competes with the earth element and in feng shui we are seeking to harmonize the elements. The numbers 1 through 9 are associated with the compass directions and their corresponding elements (fire, wood, earth, metal and water) plus the center of the home.

Because we are in period 8, the numbers 9 and 1 also having increasing energy. One aspect of the feng shui assessment is to analyze the numbers in each area of the home and harmonize the elements associated with them. For example, let's say the bedroom has a 3/8 combination. 3 = wood and 8 = earth; wood controls earth. In this 3/8 combination, the 8 is in the wealth/ career position and can be interpreted as 3 wood controlling or dominating the 8 earth wealth/career energy in the bedroom. As a consultant I would recommend to my client to place a red accent (perhaps a red candle) in this area of the home. The red candle or red accent serves to burn up the 3 wood and add to the 8 earth alleviating the dominating cycle of the elements and releasing the wealth/career position of the 8 earth.

This is one feng shui factor I always address when I am on a consultation. What is the number combination based on? It is based on the home's year of construction and the compass direction. On my website there are step by step instructions on how to take a compass reading (see Feng Shui Compass Instructions ). These are considered the "permanent" numbers and are part of the home's energy matrix. If you are able to supply me with the compass reading according to the instructions given and the year of construction I will send you a Customized 1 Page Report recommending which elements will harmonize the number combinations in the 8 areas plus the center of your home. The cost is $10.00.

To summarize, the fortunate number 8 being highlighted in the mainstream media is associated with the present 20 year cycle, known in feng shui circles as Period 8. The northeast part of the home is where the mountain 8 resides and your feng shui placement should include objects of art and accents that are gold. The idea is that you are unlocking the gold from the mountain! It has been a challenging economic year for so many people, particularly in the housing market, but I have to say by giving attention to the feng shui basics you can add to your own stability and support. Many of the powerful things in life are subtle.

Have a Natural Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is only days away. If you want to have a "Natural Thanksgiving" now is the time to think about it. A natural Thanksgiving sounds easy enough, but it takes some forethought.

For the last 30 years, our Thanksgivings have been natural (chemical free) as possible. Most Thanksgiving dinners are loaded with ingredients the Pilgrims never heard of: High Fructose Corn Syrup, MSG, artificial colors and flavors, polysorbate 60, sodium caseinate, and transfat. These ingredients are so commonplace today, that for many Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving with them.

I was motivated all those years ago to eliminate chemicals from our Thanksgiving feast, because our four-year-old daughter, Jenny, reacted to the additives and sugars in processed foods. Today, there are over 3,000 additives in our food supply, we have Genetically Modified Foods (GMO), and sugar is paramount. In fact, we now have a new sugar: High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Savannah and Ashlyn are determined to help their mom make their Thanksgiving healthy and yummy.

According to a USDA' report, about one-quarter of the calories consumed by the average American is in the form of added sugars; the majority comes from high fructose corn syrup. Part of what makes HFCS such an unhealthy product is that it is metabolized to fat in your body far more rapidly than any other sugar.

Making your Thanksgiving healthier really isn't as difficult as you might first think. Purchase a turkey with the nutrition label listing only one ingredient: turkey. Save money and make your own stuffing with leftover whole wheat bread. Instead of soda pop, containing HFCS, for the kids, offer sparkling apple juice. Don't use box mixes or canned vegetables, like sweet potatoes.

I'd like to know who came up with "candied sweet potatoes." Aren't sweet potatoes, well, sweet, without marshmallows? Did you know that marshmallows are really sugar-mallows, because they no longer contain any marshmallow root. Marshmallows are made from sugar, primarily corn syrup, water and gelatin.

I suggest regulating sugar in all its forms to dessert. Delete it from the main course. And, totally eliminate High Fructose Corn Syrup from your Thanksgiving meal altogether.

Many of the dishes we serve during the Thanksgiving meal are loaded with sugar. Why aren't they considered dessert? This is beyond me! Jello "salad" is one that stands out. Jello is made with only five ingredients: water, gelatin, sugar, and artificial colors and flavors. This doesn't sound much like a "salad" to me.

Cranberry sauce is a Thanksgiving perennial. They say there is always an exception to the rule. This is my exception for sugar during Thanksgiving dinner. Cranberries by their very nature are tart. I always purchase cranberries in the produce department and cook them with less sugar than is suggested in the directions. Some make their cranberry sauce with apple juice instead of sugar, but I haven't been able to find the right combination that suits our family.

Pre-made, whipped toppings, like Cool Whip, are primarily air, sugar and transfat. Make your own whipped topping with real whipping cream. Not only will it taste better, it's better for you. Cool Whip is made of water, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated coconut (this is the transfat) and palm kernel oil (CPKO), sodium caseinate, vanilla extract, xanthan and guar gums, polysorbate 60 (glycosperse), and beta carotene.

A natural Thanksgiving begins with having yummy, healthy recipes and then purchasing whole foods. Now's the time to do a little planning. Read labels and find products free from sugar and artificial ingredients. Take a close look at the ingredients in your favorite recipes and make healthy substitutions. Finally, keep sugar regulated to dessert.

Feng Shui Tips For Your Home and Garden

The entry to a home or the doorway into rooms is where your first view is encountered. Doorways and entrances to anything should feel welcoming. They should be clear and the pathway should allow ease of movement.

The Chi, (or energy flow), should never be made stagnant at this point. Pictures and ornamental decorations in this area should be pleasing and round leafed plants in pots attract prosperity into the home. Another tip to remember is that if you have doorways from front to back that are visible, the flowing of energy should be stopped from escape.

A Feng Shui cure for this problem, can be by placing a plant as suggested to the side of the entry: thus creating an environment to capture the Chi flow. The essence of creating good flow and attracting harmony, involves placement.

Feng Shui recognizes that small problems can have a major effect on your life, and that a well kept home will always have better chi than one where maintenance tasks have been allowed to pile up. The minor problems and inconveniences that plague a poorly maintained home can restrict your freedom of movement, cloud your ability to understand a situation, make it difficult to take advantage of opportunities, and waste your resources.

Think of Chi as an important guest you wish to welcome to your home, and make your formal entry - and the access to it from the street - as inviting as possible.

The principles of Feng Shui can be applied to your garden as well. By applying Feng Shui principles to your garden you can attract positive energy, wealth and good fortune. Given below are a few tips and ideas on how to Feng Shui your garden.

The most important principles of Feng Shui in the garden are curves and proportion. Your house is the Yin energy and your garden is the Yang energy. The Yang aspect in Feng Shui is about light and space. Try to incorporate all the five elements of Feng Shui in your garden as much as possible.

- Use a pond, birdbath or fountain to represent the water element.
- Use a sundial or bronze statue in the garden for metal.
- Use trees and shrubs for wood.
- Use plants or flowers that are red and orange in color to represent fire.
- Use earth to represent the earth element.

Water features such as pools, ponds and fountains are beautiful and encourage beneficial chi. They also symbolize prosperity and create yin (feminine) energy.

You can create more Yang (masculine) energy by using garden lights to add light to the garden's dark areas. Remember balance and harmony is the key to a Feng Shui Garden.

Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival - Zhong Yuan Jie (-C')

By now you should probably be aware of the 2008 Summer Olympics to be held in Beijing, China, this coming August. However, there is at least another event going on in (and beneath) China during August.

Every year, during the seventh month of the Chinese Calendar, it is believed that the Gates of Hell will be opened and all Hell beings (well, not nearly all, only those well-behaved ones) will be set to roam freely on Earth for a month. In this month, many spirits roamed the world in search of their past memories to fulfil their unforgotten attachments. As such, these are called the "hungry ghosts" and the festival is also called the Hungry Ghost Festival.

The Hungry Ghosts festival occurs on the 15th night of the 7th Lunar month which falls on the 15th of August this year. This festival is different from the more well-known Qing Ming Festival, or the tomb-sweeping day which is now an official holiday in China and is predominantly an ancestor worshipping day. The Ghost Festival on the other hand is for the ancestors to return the visit and is a festival of elaborate rituals of joss sticks and paper money, food offerings, and opera shows for the deceased.

The festival is also influenced by Buddhist teachings introduced into China. In the Buddhist's Ullambana Sutra, Mahamaudgalyayana, one of the chief disciples of the Buddha, well-known for his psychic powers, searched for his deceased mother during one of his meditation session. He found his mother being reborn in the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts due to her previous greed. Seeking Buddha's advice, he eased his mother's suffering and eventual rebirth into a human form by performing various rituals of merits creation and offerings. This is the famous "Mahamaudgalyayana Saving His Mother" storyline which is often performed in Chinese opera. In the Chinese context, more emphasis is placed on offerings to the ancestors than to the Sangha, or monks, as in the original Ullambana practice in Buddhism.

There are similar festivals around the world as well. These include the El Da de los Muertos Festival in Mexico, the Chugen and O-Bon Festivals in Japan as well as the Vu Lan Festival in Vietnam. This shows that people today are still in awed and respectful towards the mysterious underworld. For the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival in particular, it is a yearly reinforcement and reminder of one's filial responsibility towards the mother and other ancestors in general.

Feng Shui For Your Child's Bedroom

As a parent you can use Feng Shui principles to make the energy in your child's room supportive for their growth and development. You can also create a bedroom that promotes a restful sleep each night.

The bed should be positioned so that the head points toward the door, but not directly in line with the door. This position will make your child feel in control and sleep well at night. Try to avoid positioning the bed directly under a window. Some children feel uncomfortable sleeping this way thinking that an intruder may enter their room.

It's important to paint a color on the walls of your child's bedroom. Have her be a part of the decision making when it comes to choosing a color. It's best to pick a color that's not too bright. Since red is a fire color and creates a very active environment avoid using this color. Stick with soft pastels such as greens, blues or pinks.

Choose artwork carefully. Remember that what's hanging on the walls influences your child on a subconscious level. Keeping a photo of mom and dad in the room will help your child feel secure about sleeping alone. If they have posters of people hanging on their walls, make sure that they're positive role models.

It's a challenge to create a playful atmosphere during the day and a relaxing one at night. Ideally the bedroom should be used only for sleeping, resting and relaxing. If you don't have the luxury of a separate playroom make sure the toys are put away at night.

Applying the principles of Feng Shui in your child's bedroom can enhance her mindset, well-being and overall health.

Crystals For Ascendant in Libra

Ascendant Crystal: Rose Quartz

As an Ascendant in Libra you present yourself to the world as being charming and well dressed. You like everything around you to be in harmony and stylish, which includes your home, your office, your attire and everything in between.

Another characteristic of a ascendant in Libra is their in ability to make decisions and going from one extreme to the other. You are considered to be the most congenial of all zodiac signs and relationships are very important to you. You can tend to have a people pleasing side to you, however, this can come with a double sided sword as you also have an ambitious and unsympathetic heart and can also tend to be a little selfish. How extreme these characteristics are depends on your sun sign.

You can soften any of your less than charming characteristics by carrying a Rose Quartz; this will attract unconditional love and peaceful relationships of all kinds.

You feel best when dressed in complimenting colors and rich fabrics that are considered to be rated at well dressed; you tend to want to have a good appearance rather than actually looking and being confident. Again wearing and/or carrying a Rose Quartz will encourage self-confidence and loving yourself rather than pleasing others.

Basically the rose quartz is your best friend to have with you at all times, it neutralizes all the negative rough edges to your ascendant sign and brings peace and balance into your life. It helps you to be more creative and to acquire inner peace. This also assists with your selfish nature and deep tendency to people pleasing, and allows you to diminish your need for perfection and being in relationships that feel suffocating. So keep this best friend crystal with you at all times.

Fourth of July Party Ideas For Kids - Food They'll Love

Fourth of July marks the high point of summer but sometimes kids get left out of the party because there's only grownup food around. Here are a few food ideas that are sure to please your little ones.

Children love bite size snacks they can carry with them. Just about every child loves macaroni and cheese. You can make it special and portable by hollowing out a small dinner roll and stuffing it with mac and cheese. They won't even need a spoon.

Stuff cherry tomatoes with a mixture of one cup of cottage cheese mixed with one quarter cup of Parmesan cheese. Fill a plastic disposable container large enough to serve the stuffed tomatoes, half full of water, then freeze at least overnight. At party time serve the tomatoes on the lid of the container placed on the ice.

For a variation stuff the tomatoes with chicken salad or tuna salad.

Chicken wings are fun and easy. Cut a chicken wing in three pieces. Save the bony wing end for making chicken broth. Bake the wings at 350 degrees until done. Serve at room temperature with dipping sauces. Mix equal parts honey, lime juice and mustard for a tangy dip. Or try equal party ketchup and brown sugar for a BBQ like sauce. Each child gets their own little cup of dipping sauce.

Miniature hot dogs and buns are always a hit. Buy the little franks and refrigerator biscuits. Cut the biscuits in half. Place one little frank in the center and roll up. Bake as package directs.

Grill baby burgers and place in a cut dinner roll, top with a slice of tomato, a lettuce leaf, and favorite condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard.

Keep portions tiny. Children are constantly being told to finish their food. Mini meals make it easy for them.

Dee Power is the author of several nonfiction books. She loves to cook and grill using fresh herbs from her garden. Find more party ideas for kids.

The History Of Italian Food

While some of the most popular dishes associated with the Italian culture include a tempting slice of pizza and a heaping plate of pasta, there is much more to the world of Italian cooking. Throughout the many regions in Italy, the distinctive cuisine of the Italians shines through in a wide-range of eating habits, styles of cooking, and selection of local ingredients. The changing of the times has also influenced Italian food, as the meals served in the pre-Roman era possess both similarities and differences in the cuisine of today.

The culinary history of Italy established a reputation more than 2,000 years ago, which includes an illustrious movement during the Roman Empire. Culturally, food preparation was quite important in the past where flashes of significance have been captured in the only surviving cookbook (Apicius), which dates back to the first century BC.

The spread of Italian food diversity began after the fall of the Roman Empire when individual city states began to uphold separate identities and traditions. Each region began to display its own unique way of cooking, right down to the formation of a meatball to the characteristic cheeses and wine produced in a locale. The north developed Tuscan beef, while black truffles were very popular in Marches. Provolone and mozzarella cheeses developed in the south, as well as a host of interesting citrus fruits.

Diverse types of bread, variations in pasta, and varying food preparation techniques also differed according to region. The southern regions of Italy embrace hard-boiled spaghetti, while the north often prefers a soft egg noodle. Milan is known for their risotto, while Bologna has a deep history regarding tortellini, and Naples is famous for their pizzas.

Over the years, Italian cuisine has greatly evolved in part because of a wealth of outside influences that have added to its characteristic flavor and appeal. In the beginning, ancient Greek cookery became an integrated part of Italian cuisine. Eventually, a wealth of imports found their way into the kitchens of early Italians, who sent Roman ships to collect a variety of important foods, including wheat, wine, exotic ingredients, and fine spices from around the world. Some ships even traveled to faraway locations, such as China, to bring back edible resources that catapulted the depth and variety of Italian cooking styles.

Coastal regions are known for their developments in delicious fish and seafood dishes. For example, the island of Sardinia supplies a more traditional and simple style of cuisine, which often incorporated delicacies, associated with the sea. Swordfish, lobster, anchovies, sardines, and other Mediterranean treats represent Italian cooking of the area. In Sicily (another island region), a great deal of the cooking drew heavily from North African influences. An Arab influence also affected cuisine on the island and within the rest of the south, especially with the introduction of various spices and sweets, such as the Sicilian ice cream cake called cassata.

As for one of the most popular Italian dishes, while the history books often state that pasta was a product of the Chinese brought back by Venetian merchant, Marco Polo, it was actually a rediscovery of a food item eaten during Etruscan and Roman times. It is believed that the first pasta in Italy was made similar to the noodles of today from the same durum wheat which was cooked in ovens instead of boiled in water.

Today, the differences in Italian cooking still show through in the distinctions between the north and the south. Each region still carries their own traditions in cooking that reflects deep history and culture with a never ending supply of main courses, appetizers, and desserts that continuously tempts the taste buds.

Feng Shui Lineage and Mystique

"Master YZX, is the sixth generation Feng Shui Master in his family. Since young, he was exposed to the intricacies of this art and learnt the various schools of this study as an apprentice to his grandfather, Master ABC. This is unlike most of his peers who learnt mainly through books and workshops"

The above are typical lines taken off the websites and other advertising medium of certain famous Geomancy masters. While it is understandable to exaggerate service and products levels with advertising puffs, this one really takes the cake as it paints a misleading picture that this Chinese Art is all about secret formulas that are only passed exclusively through appointed successors and descendants. Such an advertising gimmick leads the layman to think that this art is mystical and un-learnable by most people. I have the benefit to come across the blog of the widely respected Master Joseph Yu on this matter. I would like to thank him for his thoughts on this matter. Excerpted from his blog are the following paragraphs in bold:

"I have Feng Shui practitioners today claim to be the xxx generation disciple of Yang Jun Song or even Guo Po, Huang Shi Gong, ... They are proud of peeping under the trousers of these great Fengshui masters in history. This is how the lineage game is played. How did Newton learn from Descartes? The answer is simple: from his written work. The "lineage holders" will say, "You can't learn geomancy from books. The masters in the past wrote the books in cryptic language and only the lineage holders can understand the secret. This is because the masters did not want the powerful Feng Shui technique to be in the wrong hands." How much damage can Feng Shui do if it falls in the wrong hands? Can it be worse than using the knowledge of science and technology to create modern weapons that can kill millions?

If we want to see more, we have to stand on the shoulders of Giants and not hiding under the legs of Giants and claim to be closely related to the Giants. How? The answer is simple: learn from the books written by the great people in history.

There is a Chinese proverb: Stop eating because of hiccups that describes this stupid excuse.

Our attitude should be to stand on the Giants' shoulders to see further and to respect the Giants who give us a lift. How? Learn it the way scientists do."

I hope Chinese Metaphysics believers will wise up and not be taken in by such irresponsible advertising claims. Geomancy is neither mystical nor secretive although it is a practice that requires high intellect. Greater are those practitioners that are receptive to different practices of different Geomancers and yet have the clarity of mind to discern and pick up the crme de la crme of different schools' practices. Poorer are those practitioners who need to cloud their lineage in a veil of secrecy and exclusivity to scare, confuse and con their customers. It is by no coincidence that in my review of Geomancy audit cases of customers who had suffered terribly, they had their such audit done previously by Geomancers that proliferate this type of advertising puffs.

I am a Fengshui Practitioner in private practice and I specialise in Ba Zi, Zi Wei Dou Shu ZWDS, Feng Shui, I-Ching, Qi Men Dun Jia QMDJ and other Chinese Metaphysics tools. My blog site is at: http://fengshuiforward.com and my internet forum at http://fengshuiforward.com/forum

Candy Samples

How many different types of candies do you think there are? Well, to be honest I am not quite sure of the exact number either, but I can tell you that some shops offer more than three hundred varieties of candy samples ranging from old-fashioned candies to sugar free ones. They are available for all age groups and are easily found in any candy shop.

Basically, saltwater taffy, licorice, old-fashioned candies, creamy fudge, huckleberries and sugar free are some of the most popular and common samples of candies. For instance, saltwater taffy comes in different flavors such as banana, blueberry, chocolate etc and you can buy a pound of it that has your favorite flavors for only 10.95 dollars. Other samples for instance creamy fudge will only cost you 13.95 dollars.

Even though much information concerning candy samples is available on line, one thing that amaze me is the magnitude in which candy shops are growing and turning into wholesale and distribution. In fact, they've a well-defined supply chain serving wide range of customer base that include; hotels, individuals, corporate offices, gifts shops, hospitals, news convenience businesses and sporting individuals. In most cases there's always a discount.

Not only do this candy samples come in affordable prices and for all age groups, they also come with additional snacks e.g coffee, groceries etc. In fact, all this is meant to attract and retain more customers. However, if you look around you'll notice that most candy shops not only supply individual customers and large operators, but also supply for corporate events.

Benefits And Importance Of Beet Juice

Beet was looked upon by the Romans as being good for cooling the blood. Beet root is also found to benefit against feverish conditions, especially in growing children. Later generations found that beet root was also beneficial for a very strong specific action to regulate the digestive system.

The Doctrine of Signatures, which suggests that every plant illustrates its medical purpose, supposed that beet, because of its redness, was good for the blood. In fact the iron content is not particularly high, although it is said to be present in a form that is easy to assimilate.

The whole beet family (remember sugar beet) is rich in easily digested carbohydrates, even so the calorie content is not high. The red beetroot tends to concentrate rather than lose its mineral content when boiled for two hours, but the vitamins are generally reduced. Therefore when used therapeutically beetroot is usually juiced raw. Beet root juice taste has a stimulating effect not only upon the nerves of the tongue but also on the nerves in the intestines.

In Germany there is widespread use of beet juice, which is available in pasteurized form in bottles, as a powerful restorative during convalescence. It follows that beets are also good for general weakness and debility of all sorts. In combination with other juices, especially carrot and cucumber, beet juice is not only a splendid blood builder but also one of the finest therapies for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles.

Beet juice still remains a potent force the secrets of which are far from being unlocked. It is, after carrot, one of the chief juices in the science of natural healing as practiced on earth. The chlorine present in beet juice acts to regulate digestion by controlling the peristalsis, or natural rhythmical contractions of the gut and, because of this, the assimilation of food during the time of recovery is much assisted.

Uncooked beets keep rather better than many vegetables. If you cook beets it is important to avoid damaging or cutting the skin. If this happens the red color will leach out into the cooking water leaving the cook with a very pale beet of unattractive appearance. If the skin is accidentally damaged the leakage of color will be very much reduced if you add a few drops of lemon juice or cider vinegar to the water.

The dark green beet tops should not be discarded because they are rich in carotene and in minerals. They may be juiced in small quantities as an addition to other juices, whilst steamed they make a good and cheap alternative to spinach.

Kevin Pederson has been managing a number of natural home remedies websites which have information on information on common cold as well as importance and value of beet juice.

Miracles in Life

Today, as I walked out of ICU, I met up with a lovely young woman and her young son. He was articulating his un-appreciation for hospitals. Hearing his comments and feeling badly for him, I took a good look at this very handsome little boy. He appeared to me to clearly have just been visiting someone he cared about. I continued to listen to their conversation as we entered the elevator. His hospital visit seemed to have left him a little rattled.

As the conversation when on, his mother asked him, "Who really likes being in a hospital?" At that point, I had to jump in and responded with, "No one really, sometimes, even those that work here." "But with illness, someone needs to help these people get better." "Mostly, really wonderful things have happened here."

The thought of hospitals often conjure up perceptions of sickness and death, which was my suspicion of his feelings.

His mother looked at me and said with a big smile, "Like what?" I told them that most people leave hospitals much healthier than when they came in and some even totally cured. She looked at her son, then at me and said, "Sometimes even miracles." My hair stood up on my arms and I responded with, "Yes, even miracles!"

As the elevator door opened, we stepped out and she then stopped. She looked me in the eye and said, "Just like me!" "I am a cancer survivor, and cancer free!" As she said that, I could feel her great sense of victory, happiness and love of life. I wanted to hug her, but we were strangers. I hugged her in my mind with all the love and happiness I had inside me as I know that intention also goes a very long way.

Cancer, no matter how good the prognosis, often feels like the end. With its awful images and aggressive natures, she was a walking miracle of good health and hope. Her son was smiling and I could not help but do the same. She said to me, "God bless you!" as I suddenly felt as though I had not done enough to share in this momentary celebration of her life. I wished her God's Blessings in return and we went out separate ways.

I was left with a great sense of happiness and a renewed sense of gratefulness.

Miracles come in many forms. Some we are lucky enough to witness, and some we live through.

My own personal miracles have come at some of the most important moments of my life. We all have those moments. We do however need to be open to them to be able to see them, as all miracles are not earth moving. Some are subtle and yet have the capacity to change our lives forever.

Somewhere between modern medicine and holistic therapies, I have witnessed great things. Our intentions, prayers and faith also play important roles in miracles. They don't always come in large dramatic packages but they do help.

With an open mind, body, and spirit, one becomes sensitive to all the greatness that this life has to offer - little miracles and large.

Simple Feng Shui Tips For the Holiday Season

All is Calm...All is Bright...

Does this sound like your household? Certainly, doesn't sound like mine at the moment! With all the extra "things" that we have to do - like shopping, card-writing, wrapping, decorating, cleaning, baking, cooking, attending parties, and, of course, work - it's hard to find the time to fit it all in. It's easy to get stressed out.

So, this Holiday Season, take a few minutes to create a peaceful sanctuary so that you can relax when you return home, as well as welcome your holiday guests. Adding a bit of the five Chinese elements will help maintain a natural balance in your home, ease stress, and appeal to all of your senses!

Fire

If you don't have a fireplace, light some soy candles around your main living space. The Fire element is about love, sincerity, and delight. Sitting around the warm glow of fire stirs a deep desire for community. It's the element that helps you to connect to others on a meaningful level.

Fire is the element that represents the summer season with the thrill of being alive and passionate about experiencing life to the fullest.

Earth

You can incorporate the Earth element through the use of clay pottery, soil, and quartz crystals. If you use crystals, pick ones that seem to call to you. (Having a lot of Fire energy, the citrine quartz is one of my favorites with its warm orange glow). In fact, quartz crystals are a great, affordable gift, too! An interesting exercise would be to pick out crystals for your family members, seeing what (Check out local new age stores or crystals shops and be sure to ask how to "clean" the crystals, as they carry energy).

The Earth element brings out our nurturing qualities. Earth helps us be less self-centered, which tends to happen when we're stressed. It enables us to be grounded, stable, and enjoy the comforts of home and family.

Metal

You can easily incorporate the Metal element through the use of metallic decorations and the colors gold and silver. In addition, round objects can be used.

Metal is the element for late fall/early winter, when the pace of nature starts to slow down and people turn inward. It represents creativity, sensitivity, and gives us the grace to get through all of the hosting activities. Metal is the energy of beauty and discrimination. Metal helps when it comes to beautifying the home, our food and dressing fashionably.

Water

Water can be incorporated through several ways: the use of actual water (fountains or aquariums), images of water, or dark colors, and wavy shapes. Pine roping and garland, a typical holiday decoration, represents the Water element as it's draped around the house in undulating waves.

Water is the element for winter, when much of nature is in a state of hibernation and people are more reflective. Water is the energy of wisdom, intuition, and courage. It provides us with the ability to dream and philosophize.

Wood

Wood can be easily incorporated into your Holiday scheme with a Christmas tree, poinsettias, or other plants. In addition, the colors green and blue, typical in Holiday decorations are readily used.

The Wood element represents spring, and the growth and vitality of an emerging seedling reaching for the sunlight. Let the Wood element remind you that, with the Winter Solstice, the Sun will be tracking a path ever closer to the Northern Hemisphere, as the days get longer throughout the cold, winter months.

Wood is the energy of striving, optimism, and curiosity. Wood provides us the determination to see things through. So, the Wood element is going to help you get your list done!

One Last Suggestion... And, one last suggestion for handling Holiday stress: several times throughout the day, let the Wood element subside. Take a few moments to let the Water element in by taking a few deep breaths and giving gratitude for all that you have in your life. And enjoy this very special time of the year.

Marie Diamond Uses Feng Shui to Master the Secret

The more I devote my time into finding out what makes the individuals featured in the monster hit of the year The Secret tick, the more I see what an eclectic mix of personalities they all are. Marie Diamond is no exception.

She originates from Belgium and as she tells it she first started applying "The Law of Attraction" at the age of 7 through the pictures she would draw. As the story goes her father and brother had what could be best described as a "Falling Out" with one another after her brother ran off and married without first informing the family. She loved her brother very much but he dropped out of her life entirely after his dispute with their father. She thought of him often and longed to see him again. Months went by without a word but she kept thinking of him just the same.

Out of nowhere it seems she got her first form of contact from him via a letter. Armed with his return address she wrote him back pouring out her little heart in every word written and requested to see him and his new bride. She then went to her room and drew a picture of her father and brother making amends by having them shake hands with the idea of forgiveness behind that simple gesture. She drew that picture with her intention in each and every separate stroke. She focused all her attention on the idea of her sibling and father coming together again for Christmas.

To her very own amazement she awoke on Christmas Eve to find her brother and his new bride in their living room. They (her father and older brother) where shaking hands -just like they were in the picture she had created! She knew then and there the power of emotions and the thoughts they create. She has used this method of manifesting ever since and you can see for yourself what it has done for her in her own life!

After watching the interview she gave on ABC's View From The Bay where she related this story I understood why her contribution to The Secret showed her telling her client to draw what he wanted to manifest. Before seeing that interview, I had no idea the power that form of artistic impression and intent really had in the creation of making our dreams materialize. I have been so touched by her personal story that I am in the intention of drawing a picture depicting my family -which consists of myself, my two daughters Nikki and Hunter and my dear friend Corey -who was kind enough to allow us to move in with him -letting us share his home and helping me in the process to get back on my feet-enjoying the life we are currently creating for ourselves with happiness, health and wealth behind the intent!

She also emphasized the power of "Vision Boards". She held up her own as an example of how to create one for the viewers to see. She has such great intention for wealth -that she actually had a picture of A Billion-Dollar Bill! I didn't even know they existed until I saw one on her board. The idea behind that she stated was to allow unlimited amounts of wealth and prosperity to flow into her life. I like that idea myself. How about you?

Lastly she explained how important it is for you to look at, imagine having, and focusing on the objects you put on your own Vision Board. Her advise for the board - put it in a place where you will see it though out the day -like your office for instance if you have one. The idea is to focus on it daily but she cautions -never have the board behind you as it will not be as powerful there and it may even result in the objects on the board not coming to you at all. In front of you is the best place for it but anywhere where your peripheral vision can see it will do as well.

Vegan Options at Some Common Restaurant Chains

Finding vegan options when eating out isn't as difficult as it used to be. Many restaurants have recognized the market for vegan food and have added products to their menus to attract this traditionally underserved customer base. If you've had difficulty finding vegan food when you eat out, that's about to change. In this tough economy, restaurants are eager to bring new customers to their establishments, and vegans are high on their radars! Here's where you can find yummy vegan food at the restaurants you know best!

Burger King--The BK Veggie--This vegetarian burger is available at nearly every Burger King. Order it without mayo to make it completely vegan.

McDonalds--TheMcVeggie. This is only available at a select few stores right now, but if you ask your local McDonalds to serve it, chances are they will seriously consider it. Get a bunch of your friends to request it, and it's a virtual shoo-in for the menu!

Denny's--Substitute a vegan Boca burger on any burger dish on the menu.

Subway--Order a veggie sub with no mayo or cheese and get it on whole wheat bread. Be aware, though, that if you're avoiding honey, Subway DOES put honey in their bread dough.

Quiznos--Order a veggie sub without the cheese.

Cheesecake factory-- Order angel hair pasta with garlic and marinara sauce, the eggplant sandwich or the portabello burger. You can also ask for other menu items without cheese to make them vegan.

PF Changs--Order the seasoned tofu lettuce wraps, spring rolls (ask for them without eggs, if possible), coconut curry vegetable plate, as well as any other purely vegetable-based dishes you see on the menu. PF Changs usually has quite a few vegan options for its customers, as do most other Asian restaurants.

Air: sprouts need air to breath!! They are living breathing things! Good air circulation is essential to prevent them rotting and for optimum growth.

Water: after a good overnight soaking, sprouts need water every 12 hours at least and more if it's warm. They need a good soak to wash off the enzyme that stops them from germinating.

Temperature: Sprouts like kind of what we do, nice and warm for good growth and a happy plant, comfy room temperature is the way to go

Room: remember after soaking sprouts can increase in size 30 times, give them room or they'll fight it out with each other!

Light: sprouts that produce leaves do need some light eventually, indirect sunlight is fine.

A sprouter: well they'll grow anywhere really, but a sprouter does make it easy!

Eco Surface Paint And Finishes

Interior design paint choices can be difficult. This article will look at each type of eco and natural paint, giving you the low down on each so that you can make an informed decision. Some paints and finishes claim to be natural, organic or non-toxic. As with all claims of eco-friendliness, be careful when choosing finishes as there are currently no legal requirements for manufacturers regarding toxic chemical content.

The following list looks at natural and eco interior paint ideas for your walls and ceilings:

Eco interior paint ideas - First choice

Linseed oil based paint

Linseed comes from the flax plant is an ideal resource that is renewable, sustainable and readily available. Some sources are found in by-products from the food industry. The content of linseed oil in paints can vary with some types that are made with 100%. Any pigments which are added do not contain solvents and are natural. The product lifetime can exceed synthetic paint types by up to one third. Suitable for interior and exterior applications. Paint will age and colours will fade over time. This can be restored with a coat of new linseed oil.

Eco interior paint ideas - Second choice

Wood and vegetable oil based paint

Made from natural elements such as soya bean oils, oak bark and madder root - readily available and renewable materials. Vegetable based pigments fade over time. Natural VOCs are released from natural resins like turpentine and citrus oils - these VOCs are not as toxic as traditional synthetic paint. Low levels of embodied energy.

Casein, protein, distemper, milk based paint

An old fashioned interior paint mix made from milk protein and lime. Materials are non chemical, renewable and readily available. The product comes in powder form, to be mixed when needed. The casein/milk acts as the binder. Raw materials are a non renewable resource extracted through quarrying, which destroys the surrounding natural environment. Application may cause skin and eyes sensitivity as lime is a known irritant. Some sources are found in by-products from the food industry. Suitable for interior and exterior applications. A breathable, water based and non toxic paint. Multiple coats are needed for an opaque finish. Milk paint is not appropriate for damp environments as this causes the paint to flake. The finish is washable, matt, soft and chalk like.

Clay based paint

Natural clay is a readily available and non toxic resource. Available in a small variety of colours. Finish is entirely breathable and has very good natural anti fungal and anti static properties. Entirely breathable finish which helps humidity and trapped moisture levels. Available in flat matt or textured wall effects. Good anti-static properties. A naturally non drip paint without polyurethane. Low levels of embodied energy.

Stone and mineral paint

A water based paint made from crushed stones and minerals such as limestone, soap stone, quartz sand and dolomite without the use of solvents. Materials are readily available. Mineral pigments are available in bold colours and do not fade as easily as vegetable based paints. Durability on porous surfaces is very high. Good light reflectivity. Interior paint finish is entirely breathable and has very good natural anti-fungal properties. These finishes create the same surface properties found in natural stone. Non combustible. Medium levels of embodied energy.

Lime, lime wash, whitewash, distemper paint

An alkaline powdered chalk or lime based paint which is suited to painting on top of a clay or lime plaster base. Raw materials are a non renewable resource extracted through quarrying, which destroys the surrounding natural environment. Quite a soft finish which can flake. Good anti-fungal properties. A breathable, water based and non toxic paint. Contains very low level of VOCs. Multiple coats are needed for an opaque finish. Application may cause skin and eyes sensitivity as materials are known irritants. Some paints contain acrylic polymers. Cannot be painted on gypsum plaster walls.

Eco interior paint ideas - Third choice

Low-odour, low VOCs or zero VOCs paints

There is some conflicting information surrounding these paints as low odour paints 'seem' to be safe as they do not give off the typical paint smell - leading you into a false sense of security. This does not mean that they are safe, only that a different chemical process has been used. Interior paints which state zero VOCs may well be made with alternative chemical and toxic substances which are not classed as VOCs. Paint which states low VOCs offgas lower levels of chemical vapours than synthetic paints. Both zero and low VOCs paints could have as a negative effect on your health, wellbeing and to the natural environment as traditional synthetic paints do, even though the level of exposure might be reduced. It is important to note that low VOCs still offgas, however the level is lower than with traditional paint types. There are currently no legislations as to what a low or zero VOC paint can contain to be put into this class.

Shellac paint

An interior paint made from natural, renewable and sustainable insect resin which is a by product of the insects draining sap from tree bark. Lac is imported from overseas from regions such as Thailand and India. A quick drying timber varnish which releases low levels of VOC emissions after application. Can suffer from wear and tear easier than other timber finishes. Suitable for low traffic timber flooring areas. When sourcing shellac, check the label for added methanol as this chemical reduces the eco-friendly nature of the product.

Interior wood finish, both eco and natural alternatives to synthetic timber finishes, oils and stains:

Natural wax

Plant based resources such as carnauba, candelilla plants and oils made from sunflower, soya bean and thistle. All materials are renewable, sustainable and readily available. Lower levels of toxic elements and low odour binding solvents - low levels of natural VOCs are released. Excellent stain resistant properties. Microporous products are suitable for interior & exterior applications allowing the timber to breathe. Finishes are naturally transparent and oil-based making them water-repellent. Suitable for interior uses, can be polished to a sheen. Products must cure over a few days before full strength and water resistant properties take effect. Once the wood has been penetrated with the wax, it will not flake, peel or blister.

Natural oils

This finish is made from nuts and seeds such as linseed, soya, coumarone resin and tung oil. All of these renewable, sustainable materials are readily available. Transparent finishes are naturally oil-based making them water-repellent, however less water resistant than synthetic finishes. Suitable for timber flooring and stairs and heavier wear areas as the oils are durable. Flooring oil doesn't contain biocides or preservatives. Can be used on all timber including cork finishes as well as stone and natural tiles. Natural oils are microporous allowing timber to breathe and the oils prevent timber from becoming too dry. Soya oils are quicker drying than linseed oils. Some products contain carcinogens and naturally low levels of VOCs. Two to three times the number of coats needed as well as longer drying times. Low levels of embodied energy due to minimal manufacture. Reapplication is more often than synthetic finishes. Linseed oil alone can be used as a primer for applying wax and great as an eco furniture oil. Once the wood has been penetrated with oil, it will not flake, peel or blister.

Beeswax

A fragrant and abundant resource giving a golden toned finish on timber surfaces. Finishes are naturally oil-based making them water-repellent, however less durable and water resistant than synthetic finishes. Reapplication is more often than synthetic finishes. Once the wood has been penetrated with the wax, it will not flake, peel or blister.

Water based timber finish

Releases low levels of VOCs. The low VOCs content and water based name does not mean that chemical additives & binders have not been used. An odourless and clear finish. Not recommended for flooring applications where heavy wear will occur. Solvent is water based however may contain toxic elements. Lifespan is slightly less than synthetic varnish. No solvents necessary to clean.

Primer, under coat, primer, eggshell, gloss and varnish

Made from renewable and sustainable materials; natural linseed oil and soya. Both microporous materials allowing the timber beneath to breathe. Good moisture resistance and material flexibility. Suits both interior and exterior applications, available in varying strengths. Available in a gloss or satin finish. Natural oil based materials may still offgas VOC emissions within your home.
Interior wood finish; treatments, solvents, strippers and removers:

Borax

A timber treatment with good insect and fungal repellent properties. Made from natural minerals derivatives.

Natural solvents

Natural resin oils, citrus peel and aliphatic solvents release allergens which you may be sensitive to. A fragrant additive which is used in strippers, thinners and paint.

Popcorn Facts

Unbuttered popcorn is considered to be a good, low-calorie snack. However, unbuttered popcorn can be quite tasteless. There are many ways to make unbuttered popcorn a tastier snack. A dash of brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic and onion salt, iced tea mix, peanuts and raisins can add to the flavor.

Popcorn satisfies the craving that people have for snacks. Popcorn is a type of flint corn. The kernels of this corn have a hard outer shell and are starchy inside. Dry-roasting these kernels in a specific way makes them pop up. Kernels are normally dried to a moisture level of approximately 13.5 %, which is the most favorable moisture level for popping this corn.

According to many historians, corn first came from Mexico. The oldest ears of corn were found in the Bat Caves in western central Mexico. Popcorn is a snack that is basically more then 5,000 years old and is still very popular among many people. The most astonishing fact relating to corn is that it was introduced to Europeans by the American Indian tribes. The English colonist first came to know about popcorn at the initial Thanksgiving feast.

Popcorn contains a high level of carbohydrates and fat, if people consume buttered popcorn or pop the corn the traditional way by using oil. It is a fact that each popcorn kernel contains a little amount of water inside a circle of starch, which is encircled by the hard outer surface of the kernel. Upon heating, this water usually expands and, with corresponding pressure building against the starch, it then pushes through the hard surface, making the corn burst open. With this, the soft starch inside of the kernel inflates and bursts turning the core inside out. There are many online sites available that offer facts on popcorn. People can learn a lot about popcorn and interesting ways to add to its taste.

Feng Shui - A Beginners Guide

The ancient Chinese art of energy balancing, feng shui, has attracted the modern Western mind by its variety of applications for life improvement.

Even if it could seem basic, feng shui is pretty difficult to define as it involves complex knowledge of the elements, the environment, the energetic structure of the body as well as of the principles governing the functions of the universe.

Feng means wind and shui is water in Chinese; these two elements, gentle wind and clear water are symbols of fulfillment in terms of health, wealth and fortune.

People speak of "good feng shui" and "bad feng shui" depending on the way the energies are respected and put to work for you.

The basis for feng shui is the complete understanding of nature and the taoist vision, both embracing the idea that everything is full of the life energy or light, called "chi" or "qui" (in Chinese) or "ki" (in Japanese).

The basic factors that could influence a feng shui analysis of a location, person or situation include the five elements and the yin and yang rule. Feng shui is created on the ancient symbols present in I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle.

These symbols are used in the octagonal grid, the Ba-Gua, that helps you understand or determine the various relations between the feng shui locations in the home or office and the various parts of your life.

Feng shui is common to several different schools, and it involves several levels of learning and understanding, depending on the complexity of the information you have access to and actually get to internalize.

The cures offered by feng shui for life improvement vary from the use of fountains, aquariums and crystals to the energy improvement by means of clocks, colors and mirrors.

Light and colors make an important combination by the power they can bring to a certain location. Most places characterized by "bad feng shui" suffer from lack of light and color.

The interaction of the universal elements is another crucial aspect of feng shui; wood, fire, water, earth and metal can create productive or destructive circles depending on the preponderance they have in one's space.

Each of the elements has a corresponding color; it is basic feng shui knowledge to know how to complement colors and balance an environment.

The location of the elements in a space is not randomly done as it has to be determined by the octagonal grid, the Ba-Gua.

Choosing a Caterer

Here you are planning your wedding reception, and after the ceremony, it is the most important part of the day. You have never given a thought to how that appetizer got on that tray that was being passed by a server that was offered to you. To put you at ease, most people who need catering have never purchased catering before. Visualize what you both want for your reception. What do you see, how does the event look in your mind? This day is all about the two of you and should reflect your personalities.

Location
Youre going to have an event, a special occasion where the memories will last a lifetime. Where is this going to be held? Should you have it at your familys home in the backyard? Can you see the tent with chandeliers hanging from the center, the linens draped to the floor, elegant centerpieces and your guest dining on a 7-course meal? Or should you hold your event at another location, possibly a beautiful room overlooking a lake? You may not even be sure. Your location can determine the style of service and the price. There are just as many style of catering as there are events.

The type of Catering you will need to consider is On-Premise or Off-Premise

What is Off Premise Catering?
Off-Premise catering is when the event is held at a location such as a banquet center, private home, historical sites, yacht clubs and other locations. The food is brought to the facility, as well as quite possibly the linen, china dishes, utensils and, well, everything if necessary. Sounds like a lot of work for you? Not at all! A professional catering company will arrange and take care of all the necessary items.

What is On-Premise Catering?
On Premise Catering is when the event is held at the caterers location. This could be a banquet facility, restaurant, or hotel. Everything is usually handled by the caterer and you certainly can work with the caterer to personalize your event by bringing in your own type of music, dcor and other services. The caterer should have a list of recommended vendors if you are not sure where to start. Once that is in place you can just show up and have a good time!

Selecting the Caterer
You dont do this for a living and it can be overwhelming, time consuming just trying to sort everything that is out there. A professional caterer understands this and will help guide you to making the right decision and choices for your special occasion. They are there to make your event memorable and stress-free as possible. To serve you better, a professional caterer can coordinate all the necessary items that are needed to host the event, linen, china, music, floral dcor, alcoholic beverages, cappuccino bars and more.

Use an established caterer, a company who has proven they are reliable and professional. They will have a staff that is experienced; a proven track record of past events it will be higher to keep up with their recognized reputation and standards that their customers expect.

Many newer catering companies will be learning as they go, and you should be willing to risk the increase likelihood of problem(s) in exchange for a lesser price.

Most importantly, make sure the caterer you hire is licensed and insured for your piece of mind and protection.

Whatever your needs are, simple to elegant, let a catering professional guide you in planning your next event.

Valerie Vollmer has been an off premise caterer for over 20 years. Is one of only 175 CPCE (Certified Professional Catering Executives) in the US. National Association of Catering Executives - 2nd National Vice President

Awareness For Home Price Concessions

Often a homes values are lower than the sales price since many concession are made. Before putting it on the market, they may install new carpets, new windows dressings, ceramic tile, new kitchen appliances, redo the kitchen, new ceiling fans, repaint the interior or replace window air conditioner units. If the home still doesnt sell they may paint the exterior, do extensive landscaping, walkway changes or change entrance features etc.

If after six months on the market, a potential buyer may like some of the home but did not add on features and ask for a price concession. Sellers may have to make numerous financial concessions, not reflected in the sales price to unload their properties. This is a buyers market.

If you sold you a house for $550,000 but gave you $50,000 in concessions, then that house's real value is $500,000. But, since only the sold price is recorded you cant tell the Department of Revenue that home values is lower than the sales price when you use a comparable in your property tax appeal or appraisal unless you prove it with a study.

The housing glut, increases in property taxes and skyrocketing homeowners' insurance rates are reflected in the real estate market. Price concessions are hard to prove and a study to prove a lower sold value for the comparable homes due to price concessions is debatable.

Often a homes actual value is lower than the sales price since many price concession are made. If you are using a comparable sales to determine market value, that figure may in reality be much lower than the actual recorded price indicated.

Apply our property tax guide to any home or property: Get the right values and plug in the figures for your house. Don't get stuck on the learning curve scratching you head what to do next. Eliminate mistakes in property taxes and property tax appeals.

Ovarian Cancer - It's Curable, But Women's Awareness is Very Low!

Do you ever experience any of the following?

* Bloating, abdominal swelling or loss of appetite

* Fatigue, indigestion or heartburn

* A change in toilet habit or unexplained weight change

* Constipation or diarrhoea

* Abdominal or back pain

* Irregular vaginal bleeding

* Pain with intercourse or poor bladder control

Anyone is likely to experience these symptoms from time to time. But for some women they may be the earliest indications of ovarian cancer.

The reason the fatality rate is as high as 50 per cent is that 70 per cent of women are diagnosed at such an advanced stage that successful treatment is difficult. If diagnosed and treated early, ovarian cancer is 90 per cent curable, but since most women's awareness of it is low, detection is often too late.

Some women believe their Pap smear will check for all gynaecological cancers, but it only checks for cervical cancer. There is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer, although your doctor may do an internal examination as part of the Pap smear and may be able to detect pelvic masses. However, early changes are unlikely to be detected.

An ultrasound can give a better idea of the state of the ovaries and a blood test which looks at tumor markers such as CA125, Inhibin or CEA can also help with diagnosis.

The risk factors of ovarian cancer are:

1. Increasing age. Around 80% of cases occur in women over 50.

2. A family history of ovarian, bowel, breast or uterine cancer.

3. Having never been pregnant or having had few pregnancies.

4. Having never taken the Pill.

5. Having had endometriosis.

6. Being overweight.

7. Having multiple exposures to fertility drugs.

8. Being of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

9. Genital contact with talc or asbestos.

Ovarian cancer is not that common, so don't panic if you have any of these symptoms. However, if you experience any symptoms persistently for two weeks or more, you should consult your doctor.

Steve Janovic is a writer and researcher on ovarian cyst and runs a popular website with information on the condition. He recommends the "Ovarian Cyst Treatment" report as the best way to obtain more knowledge on ovarian cysts.

Popup Blocker Software Awareness - Knowing What's Available

In the world of Popup Blocker Software there used to only be a few available. Today, this popup blocker software is everywhere. Many of the major Internet based companies have a proprietary version of a popup blocker program or an IE 7 or Firefox browser plug-in (usually a toolbar creator like Google uses) that often has at least one feature the others don't. Amongst the many popup blockers available are Stopzilla, safari, Comcast, Mirar, IE 7, CID and a plethora of private label brands for thousands of different software companies.

Many of the popup blocker software programs work the same, after all there are a finite list of ways to create popups there for there are a finite list of ways to block them. Popup Blocker Software is however getting more sophisticated due to the popup marketers getting cleaver with their code and methods. In some cases they actually get around the Popup Blocker Software by tricking you into installing an adware or malware program that locks onto known popup blocker software programs and deactivates them. You won't often know it happened until you get popups that are un-blockable.

They usually come packaged with those free screen savers or pirated programs and run in the background during the setup routine. They use a combiner program that is basically a program that creates a third executable file that's only job is to simultaneously run two programs and it is masked as the free program.

The first program is launched and has a graphical user interface, this is the actual free program. The other program runs 100% invisibly and won't even show up in your task manager list! Since the program you downloaded ran perfectly you never suspected what happened until later when you can't track it back to any software you installed.

You could have ran 10 programs and just that one was infected. Sometimes the program is a dll file and so it doesn't run until you do something in the free program that calls that file and runs a set of routines that cause havoc on your computer as well as unstoppable popups even those that take up your whole screen.

Software is getting more sophisticated utilizing the latest in artificial intelligence routines to spot an attack on the programs startup routine in the registry and other things these malware programs to do avoid being detected.

The malware creators are however running out of tricks that work as the Popup Blocker Software is not just looking for known algorithms and HTML code that creates them, they are working proactively to become alerted when aforementioned malware is installed and trying to circumvent the Popup Blocker Software protections!

This is not often included in the free popup blockers however which gives you a reason to pay for this software, but most popup blockers work incredibly well unless you install malware, so if your careful about what you download you should be OK with the free versions which essentially block all the ways a popup could possibly get in.

The malware programs use the same tricks, but by deactivating the blocker programs or creating a rule within it white listing itself, it circumvents these protections. Always make sure your popup blocker program is running, don't assume it is, just look on the toolbar where it usually shows up if it isn't there and you can't get it to run, scan your computer for malware, the best tool is a free program called Spybot search and destroy (you can Google it).

What We Already Believe to Be True

"For us to make sense of something it has to fit with what we already believe to be true or the bigger picture."1

For some that truth is horses are dangerous, for others they are an icon of beauty and freedom. Horses touch our emotions like few concepts or experiences can.

Experiential education is a way to extend truths and engage emotions in learning by doing. The premise, get people out of their comfort zone to access emotions and the corresponding problem solving skills that rarely are generated through reading or listening. Experiences familiar to enhancing leadership learning or team interaction are ropes courses and rafting. Working with a horse represents yet one more option, the key difference being horses introduce the aspect of free will.

A leader must continually manage interpretations and perceptions of both external and internal influences. While height, a rock face or rapids may be a metaphor for the challenges of the workplace, reaction to the obstacle determines the stress we put ourselves in and ultimately the outcome.

As a prey animal the horse's will is to survive, to do that they are keenly aware of their environment. The metaphor of the horse in leadership, team or change management learning represents the multiplicity of outcomes. Unlike a rope that will hold despite demonstrated fear, a horse may not. It is the relationship you build and the emotional intelligence that you demonstrate that determines the result.

The Equine Guided Education Association holds an annual conference in Valley Ford, California. This year I had the privilege of presenting an example of the work The Natural Leader offers. The focus of the presentation was to demonstrate how horses support emotionally intelligent learning. The Big Picture provides a three-dimensional perspective on the attributes of awareness of self and others.

The Big Picture brilliantly demonstrates how horses quickly reflect our emotions. Observers are given a glimpse as to how emotion and intention might be perceived by others through our actions.

Like any new leader, as I walked through a different herd awareness was on high. When my actions began to demonstrate negative energy and the emotions of anger, disgust or fear the impact on the horses was powerful. My energy represented how we can be so wrapped up in our own thoughts that we can't see when our actions are perceived differently by others. Inadvertently sending the wrong message.

As I talked through the objectives of the activity bringing my energy down to acknowledge the presence of others and my actions demonstrated the emotions of interest and acceptance. The horses immediately reflected the change and were willing to not only engage but were prepared to accept me.

The Big Picture activity has always brought to attention some of the most meaningful discussion and memorable moments in our programs. Developed from the concepts outlined in the 2001 article The Work of Leadership, the activity offers participants the opportunity to view interaction of the herd before they get into the midst, or as Heifitz & Laurie suggest on to the dance floor.

As a leader we must not only face the external challenges but our own internal ones. Developing our emotional intelligence through active and reflective practice helps us respond better when the stakes are high. By recognizing when and how our emotions are demonstrated through our actions we inspire the will in others.

1. Bushe, Gervase, Clear Leadership

Nancy Lowery - Nancy recognised that much of what she learned about leading people in the workplace she learned from her horses - a learning that translated into the launch of The Natural Leader in 2004. The Natural Leader offers leadership, communication, team and self-awareness learning through the metaphor of the horse. http://www.TheNaturalLeader.ca
